Kobi interchangeable cutting inserts — precision, wear resistance, versatility.

Share:

KOBI replaceable multifaceted carbide inserts for threading on lathes have become a popular solution in mass production due to their accuracy, durability, and ease of replacement.

KOBI thread inserts are consumable cutting elements that are installed in special holders (cutters) and ensure high‑precision thread cutting on lathes. The main advantage is the quick replacement of a worn‑out insert without regrinding the tool, which is critically important in batch and mass production, where a line downtime costs more than the insert itself.

The KB8010 alloy with a PVD coating is the main material for KOBI threaded inserts. It retains its strength and wear resistance when turning most types of materials: from carbon steels to heat‑resistant alloys.

KOBI threaded plates: what types are there

Based on profile design

  • Full-profile — the geometry fully corresponds to the profile of the finished thread. They form both the groove and the tooth top in a single pass, ensuring an ideal shape and high precision.
  • Non-full-profile (universal) — one insert can cut threads with different pitches, but preliminary work on the workpiece is required to obtain the correct profile.
  • With a chip breaker - special geometry for efficient chip crushing, which is especially important when processing viscous materials.

According to the thread standard

The KOBI range includes two main types:

  • ISO — metric thread with a 60° profile angle (the most common). A full‑profile plate forms a thread with a specified pitch ranging from 0.5 to 5.0 mm.
  • W - cylindrical pipe thread (Whitworth profile, 55°). It is indicated by the number of threads per inch, for example 11W (11 threads per inch).

There are also plates marked AG (universal profile) and N (NPT - conical pipe thread).

By location and thread direction

ER - External, right-hand - 16ER2.0ISO

EL - Outer, left - 16EL AG60

IR — Internal, right — 16IR1.5ISO

IL — Internal, left

Where E (External) is external thread, I (Internal) is internal, R (Right) is right‑hand direction, L (Left) is left‑hand direction.

Marking: how to decipher

Let’s take the 16ER2.0ISO KB8010 as an example:

16 - Plate size (IC = 9.525 mm)

E - External - external thread

R - Right - правая

2.0 - Thread pitch, mm

ISO — Metric standard 60°

KB8010 — Alloy grade

What materials are processed

KOBI KB8010 inserts work with materials according to the ISO classification:

  • P05–P30 - carbon and alloy steels
  • M05–M30 - stainless steels
  • K05–K30 - cast irons
  • N10–N20 - non‑ferrous metals (aluminum, copper, brass)
  • S05–S10 — heat‑resistant and titanium alloys

Application area

  • Mechanical engineering — threading on shafts, studs, bolts, flanges
  • Pipe industry — pipe cylindrical thread (type W)
  • Aviation and space — threaded connections in heat‑resistant alloys
  • Energy sector — thread in parts made of stainless and alloy steels
  • Fastener production — serial manufacturing of threaded parts
  • Thread repair and restoration — re‑cutting of damaged thread
