History of 3M
Here our story inspires your future.
More than a century ago, 3M began as a small mining enterprise in Northern Minnesota, which was then called the Minnesota Mining and Manufacturing Company. Now that our products have become global, they improve the daily lives of people around the world. But our success and longevity were not obvious from the very beginning. We tried. We have failed. We tried something new. They repeated it again. Innovation and perseverance drove our founders, and they continue to inspire 3M employees today.
From Humble Beginnings to the Fortune 500
When 3M started its operations in 1902, our five founders had a simple goal: to extract corundum, a mineral ideal for making sandpaper and grinding wheels. It turns out that what they thought was corundum was actually another low-grade mineral called anorthosite.
The discovery of a low-quality mineral could lead to the premature termination of the existence of our young company, but our founders persisted. Why? Because in that first year, something more important was born: the spirit of innovation and cooperation, which today forms the basis of 3M. Therefore, instead of abandoning this, we turned to various materials, applied them to other products, gained the trust of important investors and gradually increased sales.
Scientific, technical and marketing innovations brought success after success over the years, which eventually made 3M a permanent name on the Fortune 500 list. Today, more than 60,000 3M products are used in homes, businesses, schools, hospitals and other industries. A third of our sales come from products invented over the past five years, thanks to the innovations of thousands of researchers and scientists we employ around the world.
With corporate operations in 70 countries and sales in 200, we strive to create technologies and products that promote every company, improve every home and improve everyone's life.
